Fare Options

If you are a regular rider or plan to use Muni a lot while visiting, consider one of the following fare options:

  • Monthly pass: Good for one calendar month, with a 3-day grace period into the next month. Passes are valid on all Muni streetcars, buses, and cable cars. There are senior, disabled, or youth monthly passes.
  • Weekly pass: Good for one week, from Monday through Sunday. Valid for unlimited use on all Muni lines. You must pay an additional $1 to ride the cable cars. There are no senior, disabled, or youth weekly passes.
  • Token coupons: Sold in booklets of 10, token coupons are easier to use than the adult cash fare. Token coupons may have a time expiration, and you get a free transfer with them (always ask for a transfer). Cable cars require an additional payment, with no transfer issued.
  • Passports: Enjoy unlimited travel on San Francisco's world-famous transit system. Ride streetcars, buses, and cable cars as many times a day as you wish with your Passport. Available for 1 day, 3 consecutive days or 7 consecutive days. 1-day Cable Car passes, available from Cable Car conductors, are good only on Cable Cars.

There are many places to buy passes, token coupon booklets and passports.

Transfering from BART

If you travel on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and then plan to take Muni, make sure you pick up a discounted ticket transfer from the white Muni ticket machine near the add-fare machines before you exit the BART paid area, the part of the station within the fare gates. There is more info on transfering from BART to Muni.

Note: If you use BART and Muni regularly, consider a "BART/Plus" pass. Each pass is good for a half-month period and gives you unlimited rides on Muni and many other Bay Area transit agencies as well as a predetermined amount of BART fare. For more information, contact BART at 415-989-2278.

Tips for speeding up your trip:

Have your fare or pass ready.

Boarding is quicker for everyone when you have your fare, pass or transfer ready to show to the driver. Searching for a pass or money at the farebox can hold up your trip.

Take a look before you board.

See if anyone is leaving by the front door before you board. That person may be a senior or a person with a disability. They may need an extra moment or two to descend the steps.

If no seats are available, please move back.

If you have to stand, please move as far as you can to the back of the vehicle. This will allow other passengers to board faster.

Leave by the rear door.

Leaving by the rear door lets other passengers board faster. If you are a senior or a person with a disability, of course, you are welcome to leave by the front door.

Get to know Muni's lines.

Give up front seats for seniors and persons with disabilities.

Federal law mandates that the front seats of the bus be given up for seniors and persons with disabilities. Please do not sit in those seats if a senior or person with a disability needs a seat.

On Muni Metro, take advantage of Proof of Payment

Here's the tip:

Speed up your trip by boarding at any door of any Metro streetcar with your Proof Of Payment. On the Breda cars at street-level boarding locations, open the rear doors by pushing the lighted white button.

And here's the rule:

You must have Proof of Payment on all Metro streetcars and in the paid area of underground Metro stations. Always ask for a transfer on the F-line and all Muni buses, even if you are not going to transfer. Violators are subject to fine.

Full details on Proof of Payment and Always Ask for a Transfer are available.
